The Problem: AI Overviews Don't Use the Same Ranking Signals as Organic Search

Google's AI Overviews (formerly Search Generative Experience) generate answers by synthesizing content from multiple sources. The pages that appear as citations in these generated answers are not always the same pages that rank #1 in the organic results below.

A page can rank on page one for a keyword and still be ignored by AI Overviews. The inverse is also true. Pages on page two or three sometimes surface as the primary citation in an AI Overview because they have stronger extractability signals.

The disconnect exists because AI Overviews evaluate pages on a different axis. They need content that is:

  1. Directly answerable in the first paragraph
  2. Structurally segmented with question-format headings
  3. Schema-rich so the system understands entity relationships
  4. Citation-dense so the system trusts the source
  5. Passage-extractable with short, self-contained paragraphs

Traditional SEO audits check none of these. That gap is what this tool fills.

What the Audit Checks

The SGE Readiness Audit evaluates 18 on-page signals, grouped into five categories.

Answer Architecture (Checks 1, 4, 18)

AI Overviews need a direct answer near the top of the page. The audit checks whether the first substantial paragraph falls within the ideal 25 to 80 word window, whether H2 headings use question-format phrasing that aligns with conversational queries, and whether the opening sentence follows the definitional pattern ("X is Y") that AI Overviews extract most frequently.

Pages that bury their answer below three paragraphs of context lose to pages that lead with the answer.

Structured Data Depth (Checks 2, 3, 6, 7, 12, 15)

Six of the 18 checks evaluate schema coverage. The audit looks for total schema type count, FAQPage and HowTo presence, Person and Organization E-E-A-T markup, datePublished/dateModified freshness signals, BreadcrumbList hierarchy, and Speakable schema.

Pages with three or more schema types have measurably higher AI Overview inclusion rates than pages with zero or one. The combination of FAQPage plus HowTo gives AI systems two pre-structured answer formats to choose from.

Passage Retrievability (Checks 5, 8, 9)

AI Overviews synthesize answers by extracting individual passages from source pages. The audit measures content depth (word count), paragraph conciseness (most paragraphs should be 15 to 60 words), and the presence of structured content formats like lists and tables.

Long, monolithic paragraphs are harder for AI systems to extract cleanly. Breaking content into short, self-contained passages increases the probability that any single passage gets selected as an answer component.

Authority and Trust (Checks 10, 11, 13, 14, 16, 17)

Six checks evaluate authority signals. Meta description quality, canonical URL presence, image alt text coverage, outbound citation density, internal linking depth, and HTTPS status all contribute to how AI systems score source credibility.

Citation density is particularly important. Pages that link to five or more authoritative external sources score higher on the research-depth axis that AI Overviews use for credibility ranking.

Content Freshness (Check 7)

The audit checks for datePublished and dateModified signals in both schema markup and HTML time elements. AI Overviews weight recency, especially for queries with an informational or news-adjacent intent.

How the Score Works

Each check contributes equally to the final score. A perfect score is 100 (all 18 checks pass). Failures and warnings reduce the score proportionally. The letter grade maps to standard ranges: 90+ is A+, 80+ is A, 70+ is B, and so on.

The AI fix prompt at the bottom of the results gives you a ready-to-paste prompt for ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini that lists every failing check and asks for specific HTML and schema fixes in priority order.

How This Differs from Existing Tools
