OFBiz is worth a look when orders, stock and accounting must work together; Fineract and Unomi need specialist IT help, and none of these three is an owner install. If you mainly need to sell online or send invoices, start with a hosted service. The Apache license removes a software license bill. It leaves someone responsible for the business rules and the server.
These products solve different problems. OFBiz brings several back office jobs into one application. Fineract records financial accounts and lending activity. Unomi supplies customer profiles to other applications. Buying one because it is free can create a second job for the person who already closes the books.
We read the project documentation and checked releases on October 29, 2026. The examples below are illustrations, not customer stories. Start with a copy of a small, ordinary workflow and a named person who can say whether its results are correct.
October 30, 2026 update: added setup time and costs when an AI agent does the typing.

OFBiz: when one order touches several desks
OFBiz combines product catalogs, orders, inventory, manufacturing and accounting. That matters when an online sale changes the warehouse count, a purchase order and the accounts receivable balance. An ERP, or enterprise resource planning system, gives those activities shared records. It does not decide how your business ought to recognize revenue or handle damaged stock.
For example, a six person independent retailer might describe its problem as having three different stock counts by lunchtime. Its provider could configure one OFBiz catalog and order workflow, starting with twenty products that sell both online and across the counter. On a normal day, the person packing a parcel would use the same order record as the person issuing a refund. Our low operating budget below is $457 a month plus $1,634 of setup labor. Importing the real catalog, designing the shop and agreeing accounting treatment are additional quoted work.
For example, a twelve person machine shop might need to know which open orders are waiting for a purchased part. It could pilot OFBiz purchasing, inventory and manufacturing records for one repeat assembly. The morning discussion would move from searching spreadsheets to reviewing shortages against actual orders. Use the high operating case, $1,141 a month and $4,085 setup, while the provider tests permissions and recovery. Those numbers do not buy the implementation of a manufacturing process. They are an operating allowance, so the owner still needs a separate implementation proposal.
Hardware, skills and the first useful test
The release branch README requires the full Java Development Kit version 17 and gives the Gradle installation route. It also explains external database configuration. It does not publish a universal minimum RAM or processor count. We therefore use one 4 vCPU, 8 GiB server as our planning assumption, not an Apache capacity guarantee. Test the real workload before choosing a production size.
The provider needs Java application administration, database backup skills and enough understanding of your bookkeeping to test postings with the person responsible for them. A working demonstration with sample data proves only that the program starts. It does not prove that tax, shipping, permissions, opening balances or payment integrations are correct.
The download page lists 24.09.07 as the current download. Its release notes identify that release; the series registry dates it June 10, 2026. Begin with those official links and verify the download signature. Ask for a private pilot with invented customer records, ordinary orders, a cancellation and a partial refund. Make the bookkeeper reconcile those results before adding real customers.
What the operating bill actually replaces
Shopify Basic costs $39 per month on monthly billing, read October 29, 2026. That is a sensible alternative when the retailer's actual requirement is an online shop. It is a narrower product than a configured ERP. The table assumes one store in both cases; low and high store counts are both one. It excludes payment processing, paid apps, storefront design and implementation on both sides. It assumes no separately charged Shopify setup for this limited subscription comparison.

Setup = hours × $68.09. Monthly = servers + (stored GB minus 10) × $0.00695 + administration hours × $68.09. Total = setup + 36 × monthly; savings = alternative total minus self hosted total. Calculations use unrounded values; displayed totals round to whole dollars.
Shopify's subscription is cheaper in both cases. The three year difference is $16,688 to $43,752 against self hosting before ERP implementation. That is a reason to keep the requirements narrow. OFBiz might still earn its cost by connecting manufacturing, purchasing and accounting, but that benefit needs evidence from your process. Do not label the license price as a saving against a service that solves a smaller problem.
Odoo Standard is a closer hosted business suite comparison. The regular US price is $38.90 per user per month on monthly billing, or $31.10 per user per month paid yearly, confirmed in the browser on October 29, 2026. We use the regular monthly rate and exclude the first year discount. Our assumption is five paid users in the low case and ten in the high case. Both alternatives still need separately quoted migration and implementation.

QuickBooks Online Simple Start is $38 a month at the regular monthly price, confirmed October 29, 2026. Its introductory discount is excluded. It is worth considering when bookkeeping is the actual need, but it is not a replacement for all OFBiz modules and is not used in this ERP savings calculation.
Skip OFBiz if your stock fits one reliable system already, your accountant needs only a familiar ledger, or no one can own updates. A small retailer can spend more fixing a bespoke checkout than it saves in subscriptions. For payment handling, check PCI DSS before storing or processing card data. Having an Apache application does not establish compliance. Keep card collection with an appropriate payment service unless qualified advice says otherwise.
Setup time when Claude or ChatGPT does the typing
We keep the OFBiz example's one $48 server and 100 to 500 GB of backups. We apply our IT assistance assumptions to its existing IT labor budget, despite using one host. These paired low and high cases are assumptions, not measured installations; human review is included. Coding studies do not validate deployment savings.

With L = $68.09/hour, S/A = manual setup/monthly hours, q/r = AI shares, H = hosting plus backups, and T0/Tm = setup/monthly tools: manual total = S × L + 36 × (H + A × L); AI total = S × q × L + T0 + 36 × (H + A × r × L + Tm). Round totals after calculation.
Claude and ChatGPT each cost $100 for the selected monthly plan: one setup month, then $50/month (50%) for 36 operating months if other work uses the rest. Dedicated use adds $1,800 to each total. Allowances differ; check limits and budget extra usage. High cases save no admin hours; subscriptions exceed manual costs from month 7.
API billing is separate. Token cost = (ordinary input × rate + cache writes × rate + cache reads × rate + output × rate) / 1,000,000. Our cumulative budgets include retries and billed reasoning: low input is 30% ordinary, 10% short writes, 60% reads; high input is uncached. Use standard rates within context limits.
Claude Code or Codex can draft OFBiz database settings and backup scripts. Desktop Commander can install Java, edit OFBiz configuration and read startup logs through authorized server access; we budget its free local server, excluding optional paid Remote. Claude in Chrome can inspect provider settings, Cloudflare DNS and OFBiz order permissions; ChatGPT Work offers a separate cloud browser, not an assumed Chrome extension.
Use a new or staging server, keep secrets out of chat, and approve commands or restrict them in a sandbox. Watch dashboard actions; review changes, reconcile sample orders and test a database restore. Use subscriptions through supported supervised tools and API keys for custom automation; check applicable terms and never share account credentials. We still own backups, updates and access decisions.
Our conclusion stays the same: Shopify remains cheaper for a store alone, and Odoo remains cheaper for the illustrated ERP users; neither comparison pays for implementation.
Fineract: account and loan operations require a different budget
Fineract is a platform for financial service providers. Its records concern clients, loans, savings and financial transactions. A shop offering occasional payment terms should not assume that it needs a core financial platform. A specialist lender with a genuine account servicing requirement might.
For example, a nine person nonprofit loan fund could need a reproducible answer to which repayments were due yesterday and which were posted late. Its specialist provider might build a pilot loan product and reconcile a month of invented transactions. Staff would see a consistent schedule and transaction history at their daily review. Use the low case below, $661 a month and $1,634 setup, only for the infrastructure exercise. Product configuration, migration, reconciliation design and specialist financial advice need separate quotes.
For example, a fifteen person credit union evaluating a new lending workflow could test the handling of a rescheduled payment and a reversed transaction without touching its live ledger. The ordinary workday improves only if the loan officer and accounting team agree on the resulting balances. The high infrastructure case is $1,345 a month plus $4,085 setup. It excludes the substantial work needed to make this a production financial system. Before storing member or borrower information, check the GLBA Safeguards Rule where it applies, or the applicable credit union regulator's safeguarding rules. This is a scoping checkpoint, not a compliance assessment.
Read the production warning before the container command
The current Fineract documentation specifies 16 GB RAM and an eight core CPU as minimum hardware for running Fineract, with development and testing potentially needing more. It lists Java 25 or later and PostgreSQL 18 or later in its development environment requirements. Check the documentation for the exact release you deploy. Our chosen shared hosting tier is the 8 vCPU, 32 GiB DigitalOcean server at $252 a month. Virtual CPUs are not a guarantee of eight dedicated physical cores, so the provider must validate performance and confirm whether a different machine is necessary.
The project README supplies container and build instructions and explicitly warns that its images are not production ready. That warning changes the buying decision. Someone must configure authentication, certificates, secrets, database persistence and recovery. Someone also has to test the scheduled financial processing, including what happens after downtime.
The release list shows 1.16.1, published October 26, 2026. It identifies a serious close of business processing problem in 1.16.0 that is fixed in 1.16.1. This is why a download check belongs in an evaluation, even when a catalog was compiled the same day. Do not start a new trial from an older bookmarked image tag.
A quote is more honest than an invented saving
We considered Mambu as a managed core banking alternative. Mambu publishes no price on its site; its pricing address returned a not found page when we checked on October 29, 2026, so neither a monthly alternative total nor a break even month can be calculated. Ask the vendor to quote the same account volume, product scope, support hours, implementation and exit export as the Fineract provider.

Setup = hours × $68.09. Monthly = servers + (stored GB minus 10) × $0.00695 + administration hours × $68.09. Total = setup + 36 × monthly; savings = alternative total minus self hosted total. Calculations use unrounded values; displayed totals round to whole dollars.
Our low and high assumptions are one server in both cases, 100 to 500 GB of retained backups and the shared IT oversight hours. The three year operating totals are $25,436 to $52,500. They are not a bid for a banking system. For a monthly vendor quote Q and separately quoted setup S, its three year total is S + 36 × Q. Only after both proposals include the same work should you subtract the Fineract total and calculate a break even month.
Skip this project if ordinary invoicing is the need, if the organization cannot independently reconcile its records, or if nobody owns incident response. A lower hosting bill is irrelevant when the team cannot tell whether a balance is correct. Start with the official documentation, then ask a financial systems specialist to demonstrate a restore and reconciliation using synthetic data. An outside provider bills more than the employee compensation estimate used here; obtain a real quote.
Unomi: customer profiles are useful only when another system acts on them
Unomi stores profiles and events so connected applications can tailor an interaction. It is a customer data platform component. It is not an email campaign editor, a complete CRM, or an online shop. Your developer still connects the website, decides which events mean something and makes the receiving application use the resulting information.
For example, an eight person ecommerce brand could want to distinguish a returning trade buyer from someone browsing a gift. Its developer could send a small set of consented events to Unomi and make a signed in account page show the appropriate catalog. Staff would maintain fewer manual lists. Our low operating case is $505 a month plus $1,634 setup before event design or website changes. A hosted store's existing customer tags might solve the same problem with much less work.
For example, a two location gym with eleven staff might want membership inquiries from both sites to reach the right follow up process. A provider could test a shared profile identifier and one inquiry event, using invented members first. On a normal day, staff would see the inquiry's location without copying it between lists. The high allowance is $1,189 a month and $4,085 setup, excluding integration. Do not collect health details merely because the software can store arbitrary properties. For this illustration, only inquiry routing and location are in scope.
Two services, a retention policy and a developer
The Unomi manual gives a Docker Compose quick start with Unomi and a search engine. It documents Java 17 and Elasticsearch 9 for the 3.x platform; the moving manual also contains work for newer releases, including OpenSearch support. Have the provider use the requirements for the selected release rather than copying a newer development example into an older installation.
The manual does not give one universal CPU and RAM minimum for a business workload. Our estimate separates the application and search service onto two 4 vCPU, 8 GiB servers, both low and high cases. That is a sizing assumption for a small evaluation, not a documented minimum node count or a resilient cluster. A one host demonstration is possible in the documented quick start. Replication and a production availability target need their own design and larger estimate.
You need Java and search engine administration, website development, access control design and someone accountable for consent and deletion. A profile copied into an email platform does not disappear there merely because it was deleted from Unomi. Write down the complete route from collection to deletion before gathering a large history.
The download page lists 3.0.1 dated July 20, 2026. We use that project page date rather than the older date in the directory registry. Start from its installation links, keep the pilot private and test an event arriving twice, a profile merge and a deletion. These tests say more about operational fitness than a screen full of customer counts.
Compare the complete customer data job
Twilio Segment's customer data pricing offers a Customer Data Platform with custom volume pricing and directs buyers to sales. That is a genuine managed alternative, but there is no published flat CDP subscription to insert into this calculation. We do not reuse an old Connections plan price as though it bought the current CDP features.

The self hosted three year totals are $19,820 to $46,884, before integration. Savings and break even remain unknown until Segment supplies a comparable quote. If the job is simply two customer tags and a welcome email, compare the tools in your existing store first. Unomi is easier to justify when several applications need shared profile rules and you already employ someone who can maintain those connections.
Skip it when no one can describe the action a profile will trigger. Collecting data without a decision attached creates retention work and another sensitive database. Start with one event, one receiving application and a deletion test. Add more only after that small path works.
Needs your IT department or a provider
All three projects above belong here; there are no additional IT entries hidden below the table. Each needs application configuration as well as server administration. Our allowance uses 24 to 60 setup hours and 6 to 16 administration hours a month because the records and integrations justify IT oversight. That is our assumption, not a measured deployment time. It excludes custom development, data cleanup, migration, training, compliance assessments and serious incidents.
Ask proposals to separate infrastructure, implementation and ongoing responsibility. A named update owner, a restore rehearsal and an agreed export format belong in the proposal. If the proposal says only that the software is free, the expensive questions remain unanswered.
Your developer's toolbox
This group has no library entries. A developer may still use libraries inside an implementation, but the three table entries are systems with continuing operational duties. The developer tools article explains how to ask about those dependencies without trying to maintain every component yourself.
Risks, support and the license
Watch the OFBiz security page and the ASF security guidance. Also check Fineract advisories and Unomi advisories. Use the reporting and advisory links from each project's official site. Subscribe the person responsible for updates, not an unattended mailbox. Track the installed release separately from the latest release; a new download does not patch your server.
Before signing a support contract, ask the vendor which releases it maintains, what its response hours mean and whether it will restore your data into a clean environment. Apache community mailing lists help with questions but are not a paid response guarantee. A quiet release page deserves a look at recent mailing list activity and the Apache Attic; a recent release alone does not establish that someone will support your configuration.
The Apache License 2.0 generally permits business use, modification and distribution subject to its terms. Redistribution carries notice and license obligations; the license does not grant broad rights to Apache trademarks. It also does not provide a warranty or a service contract. Read the actual terms with an adviser when your distribution needs review; this article is not legal or financial advice.
