Your newsletter
Your fair-swap value
Used to size the ask. Sponsorship-equivalent value is what you could charge a paid sponsor for equivalent placement; swap-equivalent is the audience size you should target in return.
How the math works
CPM (opens) = industry benchmark $35–$50 per 1000 opens for dedicated sends. We use $40.
Open value per send = subs × open rate × $40 / 1000.
CPC (clicks) = benchmark $1.50–$3.00 per click for niche B2C, higher for B2B. We use $2.00.
Swap-equivalent audience = partner needs open-count within ±30% of yours for the swap to be fair.
Partner-fit criteria
What to look for when vetting a potential swap partner. Any partner that checks 6 of 8 is a green light.
Outreach templates
Swap brief (send once both parties agree)
One-pager that locks in dates, audience, content, and measurement.
Where to find partners
SparkLoop Upscribe / Partner Network — sparkloop.app. Creator-side but useful for discovery.
beehiiv Boosts — if you or the partner is on beehiiv, Boosts marketplace is the quickest swap matching.
Substack Recommendations — if your newsletter is on Substack, one-sided recommendation is free and drives 20–40% of growth for mid-size Substacks.
LinkedIn + Twitter/X creator search — search your niche plus "newsletter" or "Substack" and filter for creators in your size range.
Indie Hackers, Twitter Spaces, small creator Discords — the humans behind 500–10,000-sub newsletters in your niche; start conversations before asking for swaps.
Disclaimer: Value benchmarks are industry averages as of 2026 and will drift. Paid-placement math is a floor, not a ceiling — audiences with provable purchase intent (SaaS buyers, high-income verticals) command 3–10× the numbers above. Always disclose partnerships per FTC 16 CFR Part 255 when money or products change hands.
