# n8n Small Business and AI Workstation Kit A generalized, tested kit for running n8n yourself: a hardened Docker Compose setup with PostgreSQL, eight importable workflows (leads, reviews, promotions, monitoring, reminders and a chat control panel for an AI workstation), the restricted SSH pattern that lets a chat message run only named actions, and copyable prompts for doing the setup with Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code or Codex as your helper. Companion article: https://jwatte.com/blog/n8n-small-business-automation-guide/ ## How to read this kit - **Tested version.** Everything here was run on n8n 2.42.7 (the release tagged stable on October 12, 2026) with PostgreSQL 17, on a disposable test machine with local stand-ins for email, Telegram, Slack and the model. Nothing was sent to a real person, chat or workspace. Section 12 lists exactly what ran and what did not. - **Placeholders.** Every value you must change starts with `REPLACE_`. Search the file for it. Secrets are never shown; you generate them. - **No secrets in chat.** When an assistant helps you, it works with the placeholders. You paste real tokens and keys into n8n's credential screens or into the `.env` file on the server, never into a conversation. - **Not legal advice.** The email and messaging rules in section 7 summarize official pages with links. Read the originals for your situation. ## Contents 1. What you need 2. The Compose file and environment template 3. First start, owner account and two-factor sign-in 4. Reverse proxy with TLS 5. Sources ## 1. What you need - A Linux server or a dedicated workstation with Docker Engine and the Compose plugin installed from Docker's own instructions. - A domain name you control, pointed at the server, for the editor and webhooks (for example `automation.REPLACE_yourdomain.com`). If you only use n8n from your own devices over a private network, you can skip the public name and TLS certificate, but keep the localhost binding. - About 4 GB of memory set aside for n8n (the Compose file caps it at 4 GB) plus what PostgreSQL needs. - 30 minutes a month for updates and a backup check (section 6). ## 2. The Compose file and environment template Make a folder for the stack, for example `~/n8n`, and save these two files in it. **docker-compose.yml** ```yaml # n8n with PostgreSQL, bound to localhost, meant to sit behind a reverse proxy with TLS. # Every value in ${...} comes from the .env file next to this file. Section 6 explains why losing it costs you every saved credential. ## 3. First start, owner account and two-factor sign-in ```bash cd ~/n8n docker compose pull docker compose up -d docker compose ps # both services should become healthy curl -s http://127.0.0.1:5678/healthz/readiness # {"status":"ok"} once the database is connected and migrated ``` Then, from your own browser, open the public address (after section 4) or an SSH tunnel to port 5678. n8n shows a sign-up screen for the owner account on first launch. Use a password manager generated password; n8n requires at least eight characters with a number and a capital letter. Turn on two-factor sign-in right away: **Settings > Personal > Enable 2FA**, scan the code with an authenticator app, and store the recovery codes with your encryption key. Do not invite other users until 2FA works for you. ## 4. Reverse proxy with TLS n8n binds to 127.0.0.1 only, so nothing reaches it except a reverse proxy on the same machine. Any proxy works; n8n's docs show Traefik. With Caddy installed on the host, the whole site block is: ``` automation.REPLACE_yourdomain.com { reverse_proxy 127.0.0.1:5678 } ``` Caddy obtains and renews the certificate and redirects plain HTTP to HTTPS on its own, and it sets the `X-Forwarded-For` and `X-Forwarded-Proto` headers n8n needs behind a proxy. Keep `N8N_PROXY_HOPS=1` (one proxy in front) and `N8N_PUBLIC_URL` equal to the public address with a trailing slash. If you set `N8N_HOST_PORT` to something other than 5678 (for example because another service already uses it), change the port in the site block to match. The tested lab ran the same proxy pattern with Caddy's internal certificate authority and confirmed the readiness endpoint answered 200 over HTTPS through it. Public certificate issuance was not tested there. Never expose port 5678 directly, and never publish the editor without TLS and a 2FA protected owner account. ## 5. What each setting does and why | Setting in the Compose file | Why it is there | |---|---| | `image: docker.n8n.io/n8nio/n8n:${N8N_VERSION}` pinned to an exact version | n8n ships a new minor version most weeks. Pinning means nothing changes until you choose to update (section 6). n8n's docs write the image as `n8nio/n8n`; this kit uses n8n's own registry name, which is the one tested. | | PostgreSQL 17 with a health check, n8n waits for it | n8n 2.42.7 logs "Postgres 16 is outside the supported range and receives compatibility support only. Upgrade to Postgres 17 or newer." n8n's own Compose guide uses Postgres 18. | | `N8N_HOST`, `N8N_PROTOCOL`, `N8N_WEBHOOK_URL`, `N8N_EDITOR_BASE_URL`, `N8N_PROXY_HOPS` | Behind a reverse proxy, n8n cannot work out its public address from host, protocol and port, so webhook URLs would point at the wrong place. `N8N_WEBHOOK_URL` replaces the older `WEBHOOK_URL`, which is deprecated from 2.35.0 and logs a warning. | | `N8N_SECURE_COOKIE=true` | The sign-in cookie only travels over HTTPS. | | `GENERIC_TIMEZONE` and `TZ` | Schedule triggers use the n8n time zone; `TZ` sets the container's system time zone. The n8n default is America/New_York, which is wrong for most people. | | `N8N_ENCRYPTION_KEY` | Encrypts every saved credential in the database. Without it, a restored database or encrypted credential export cannot be decrypted. If you do not set it, n8n generates one and keeps it inside the data volume, which is easy to lose. | | `N8N_ENFORCE_SETTINGS_FILE_PERMISSIONS=true` | Keeps the settings file (which holds the key) readable only by its owner. | | `N8N_DIAGNOSTICS_ENABLED`, `N8N_VERSION_NOTIFICATIONS_ENABLED`, `N8N_TEMPLATES_ENABLED`, `N8N_PERSONALIZATION_ENABLED` set to false | A self-hosted instance sends telemetry and fetches templates by default. Turning these off keeps the instance quiet. Because version notifications are off, you must watch releases and advisories yourself (section 6). | | `N8N_COMMUNITY_PACKAGES_ENABLED=false` | Community nodes are third-party code that runs inside n8n. Leave them off unless you have reviewed a specific package. | | `N8N_BLOCK_ENV_ACCESS_IN_NODE=true` | Expressions and Code nodes cannot read the container's environment, which holds the database password and encryption key. This is already the default in n8n 2.x; setting it explicitly documents the intent. | | `N8N_BLOCK_FILE_ACCESS_TO_N8N_FILES=true` | File nodes cannot read n8n's own folder. | | `NODES_EXCLUDE` with Execute Command, Read/Write Files from Disk and Local File Trigger | Execute Command runs any shell command on the n8n host; n8n's security advisory for it says the mitigation is to disable the node. The default list in 2.x already excludes Execute Command and Local File Trigger; this kit also excludes Read/Write Files from Disk. Anything a workflow needs from another machine goes through the SSH pattern in section 10. | | `EXECUTIONS_DATA_PRUNE=true`, `EXECUTIONS_DATA_MAX_AGE=168` | Execution history holds copies of the data that passed through (names, emails, messages). The default keeps 336 hours (14 days) and up to 10,000 executions; this kit keeps 7 days. Shorter is better for privacy; longer helps debugging. | | `ports: 127.0.0.1:${N8N_HOST_PORT}:5678` | Only the reverse proxy on the same machine can reach the editor. | | `mem_limit`, `cpus`, `no-new-privileges`, log rotation | A runaway workflow cannot take the whole machine, the process cannot gain privileges, and logs cannot fill the disk. | | Health check on `/healthz/readiness` | Returns 200 only when the database is connected and migrated, so `docker compose ps` shows real health. | Two things this kit leaves at n8n's defaults on purpose, and why you might change them: - **Task runners run in internal mode.** n8n 2.42.7 logs that internal mode is deprecated, and n8n's docs warn that with internal mode, anyone who can edit a workflow could potentially read the database, encryption key and credentials. For a single owner who is the only editor, that is the same person who holds the keys anyway. If anyone else will edit workflows, move to external mode with n8n's separate runners image as n8n's task runner docs describe. That setup was not tested with this kit. - **The public API is on.** If you will not call n8n's API, add `N8N_PUBLIC_API_DISABLED: "true"` to the environment block. After the first start, run n8n's own security audit and read it: ```bash docker compose exec n8n n8n audit ``` On the tested setup it listed unused credentials and every workflow that uses a node able to run code or reach other machines (Code, SSH, HTTP Request), which is a useful inventory to review monthly. ## 6. Backups, restores and updates **What to back up, and why each one matters** 1. The PostgreSQL database: workflows, credentials (encrypted), users and execution history. 2. The encryption key in `.env`: without it, the encrypted credentials in the database are unreadable. 3. Workflow and credential exports from n8n's CLI: a second, portable copy you can import into a fresh instance. ```bash cd ~/n8n mkdir -p backups STAMP=$(date +%Y%m%d) # 1. Database dump (custom format, restorable with pg_restore) docker compose exec -T postgres sh -c 'pg_dump -U "$POSTGRES_USER" -d "$POSTGRES_DB" -Fc' > "backups/n8n-db-$STAMP.dump" # 2. Workflows and credentials (credentials stay encrypted with your key) docker compose exec -T n8n sh -c 'rm -rf /home/node/.n8n/backups && mkdir -p /home/node/.n8n/backups/workflows /home/node/.n8n/backups/credentials && n8n export:workflow --backup --output=/home/node/.n8n/backups/workflows/ && n8n export:credentials --backup --output=/home/node/.n8n/backups/credentials/' docker compose cp n8n:/home/node/.n8n/backups "backups/n8n-export-$STAMP" # 3. Keep .env (with the key) in your password manager or an encrypted store, not next to the dumps on the same disk ``` Copy the `backups` folder off the machine (encrypted). The exports are written inside the data volume because a folder elsewhere in the container would not survive a restart. Never use `--decrypted` for routine backups: it writes every credential in plain text. **Restore drill (do it once before you need it):** start a second copy of the stack on a test machine with the same `N8N_ENCRYPTION_KEY`, restore the dump with `pg_restore`, or import the exports with `n8n import:workflow --separate --input=` and `n8n import:credentials --separate --input=`. Imported workflows arrive unpublished, so nothing fires until you publish them. **Updating safely** 1. Read the release notes for every version between yours and the target, and look for breaking changes. 2. Check n8n's published security advisories (GitHub, repository n8n-io/n8n, Security tab) for anything that affects your version. 3. Take the backup above. 4. Change `N8N_VERSION` in `.env` to the exact new version, then: ```bash docker compose pull docker compose up -d docker compose ps docker compose logs --tail 80 n8n # look for errors and deprecation warnings ``` 5. Run one webhook workflow and one scheduled workflow by hand, and confirm the reply or message arrives. n8n's docs recommend updating at least once a month. Security fixes arrive more often than that: in 2026 n8n published advisories for critical remote code execution and file access problems, fixed in specific releases, so a version that is several months old is exposed. Because this kit turns off n8n's in-app version notifications, subscribe to the repository's releases and security advisories instead. ## 7. Channels: email, Telegram and Slack ### How each one actually works in n8n **Email** - **Send Email node (SMTP):** sends one message per item through any SMTP server (your mail host, or an email provider's SMTP relay). Good for owner alerts, digests, receipts and approvals. In n8n 2.42.7 it has no option to add custom headers, so it cannot add the List-Unsubscribe headers that Gmail and Yahoo require for bulk marketing mail. It also adds a line "This email was sent automatically with n8n" unless you turn off **Append n8n Attribution**. - **Gmail and Microsoft Outlook nodes:** send from your mailbox through its API with OAuth. Fine for one-to-one replies and approvals; not for promotions to a list. - **Email service provider nodes** (Mailchimp, Brevo, Mailjet, SendGrid, MailerLite, Kit, ActiveCampaign, Mautic and others have n8n nodes): use these for promotions. The provider keeps the consent records, unsubscribe handling, bounce suppression, postal address footer and sending reputation. n8n's job is to feed it: add a subscriber who opted in, tag a segment, or prepare a campaign for a person to approve. **Telegram** 1. In Telegram, open a chat with **@BotFather**, send `/newbot`, choose a name and a username ending in `bot`. 2. BotFather gives you a token. Treat it like a password: anyone with it controls the bot. Paste it only into n8n's Telegram credential (**Access Token**). 3. A bot cannot start a conversation. Each person must open the bot and press Start (or send a message) first; only then can the bot message them. 4. Find your chat ID: send the bot a message, then run a Telegram Trigger workflow in test mode and read `message.chat.id` and `message.from.id` in the output. Put them in the trigger's **Chat IDs** and **User IDs** restrictions so nobody else can drive your workflows. 5. To post in a channel, add the bot to the channel as an administrator with permission to post messages, then use the channel's `@username` or its numeric ID as the chat ID. 6. The Telegram node can send messages, photos, documents and other media, edit and delete messages, and **Send and Wait for Response** (approve or decline buttons). 7. Telegram's published limits (Bot API FAQ): in a single chat, avoid more than one message per second; in a group, no more than 20 messages per minute; for bulk notifications, about 30 messages per second unless you pay for broadcasts. **Slack** 1. Create a Slack app in your workspace, add the bot token scope `chat:write` (send messages). Add `channels:history` and `channels:read` only if a workflow must read public channels, and the matching `groups:`, `im:` scopes only for private channels or direct messages. 2. Install the app to the workspace and copy the **Bot User OAuth Token** into n8n's Slack credential. 3. Invite the bot to each channel it posts in (`/invite @yourapp`). Without that, posting fails with `not_in_channel`. The `chat:write.public` scope removes that need for public channels, but keeping the bot to invited channels is the narrower choice. 4. **Slack node versus incoming webhook:** the Slack node uses the bot token and can post anywhere it is invited, read, react, and run approvals inside Slack. An incoming webhook is a single secret URL tied to one channel; n8n posts to it with an HTTP Request node. The webhook URL is itself the secret, so it sits in the workflow, which is weaker than an encrypted credential. 5. Slack's published limit: generally one message per second per channel, with short bursts allowed. 6. Slack reaches your team or a community workspace. It is not a channel for reaching customers. ### Comparison | | Email (through a provider) | Telegram | Slack | |---|---|---|---| | Who it reaches | Customers and prospects who gave you their address | People who opened your bot, or members of your channel or group | Your team, or a community workspace you run | | Consent model | Opt-in for marketing, working unsubscribe on every promotional message, honored within days | The person must start the bot; they can block it any time | Workspace membership | | Published limits | Provider plan limits; Gmail and Yahoo spam rate below 0.3 percent | 1 per second per chat, 20 per minute per group, about 30 per second bulk | About 1 per second per channel | | Cost driver | Provider plan by contacts or sends | Free (paid broadcasts above the free rate) | Slack plan for the workspace | | Best use | Promotions, newsletters, reminders customers expect | Owner alerts, approvals, a channel for loyal customers | Team alerts, review triage, approvals | ### Compliance box (summary of official pages, not legal advice) - **US CAN-SPAM (FTC guide):** no false or misleading header information; no deceptive subject lines; identify the message as an ad; include your valid physical postal address; tell people how to opt out; honor opt-outs within 10 business days (and keep the opt-out working for at least 30 days after sending); you remain responsible for anyone sending on your behalf. Each separate violating email can cost up to $53,088 (the FTC's inflation-adjusted figure as of the page read on October 13, 2026). - **Gmail bulk senders** (close to 5,000 or more messages a day to personal Gmail accounts, and once you qualify you stay a bulk sender): SPF and DKIM, a DMARC record (policy none is allowed), one-click unsubscribe for marketing messages plus a visible unsubscribe link, honor unsubscribes within 48 hours, and keep the user-reported spam rate below 0.1 percent and never at 0.3 percent or higher. - **Yahoo:** SPF and DKIM, DMARC at least p=none for bulk senders, a working List-Unsubscribe header with one-click (RFC 8058 POST method recommended), honor unsubscribes within 2 days, spam rate below 0.3 percent. - **RFC 8058 one-click unsubscribe** means two headers, `List-Unsubscribe: ` and `List-Unsubscribe-Post: List-Unsubscribe=One-Click`, covered by the DKIM signature. Email providers add these; n8n's Send Email node cannot. - **Every promotional send:** only to people who opted in, with a working unsubscribe, sent through a provider that handles it. - **Chat apps are not for regulated data.** Keep health information, payment card numbers, government ID numbers and similar data out of Telegram, Slack and email alerts. Send a reference ("new intake form #1042, open it in the portal") instead of the content. ## 8. The eight workflows Import each file in the n8n editor (**Create workflow > ... menu > Import from File**) or with the CLI (`n8n import:workflow --input=`). Then open every node with a warning triangle, choose or create its credential, and replace every `REPLACE_` value. Run it once with test data before you publish it. In each scheduled workflow, the **Run now (test)** node lets you run it on demand. Credentials you will create: **Header Auth** (for webhooks: name `X-Webhook-Token`, value a long random string your form or tool sends), **SMTP**, **Telegram API** (bot token), **Slack API** (bot token), **SSH Private Key** (the restricted automation key from section 10) and, for the model step, **OpenAI** (an OpenAI key, or any OpenAI-compatible gateway such as LiteLLM in front of local models, by changing the credential's Base URL). Set workflow 08 as the **Error workflow** in the settings of every other workflow. | File | Trigger | Nodes in order | Channel | Watch out for | |---|---|---|---|---| | 01-lead-to-telegram.json | Webhook POST `/webhook/lead` with header auth | Honeypot check, Clean fields (trimmed to safe lengths), Telegram to owner, Respond to Webhook | Telegram | A form that posts from the browser exposes the header value; have your site's server side or a form service call the webhook. Do not collect regulated data in this form. | | 02-review-alert-slack.json | Webhook POST `/webhook/review` with header auth | Draft reply, rating check, Slack message (needs reply / good news) | Slack | Drafts are for a person to edit and post. Never auto-post replies to public review sites. | | 03-weekly-promo-approval.json | Weekly schedule (Monday 9:00) | Draft promotion, Send Email and wait for the owner's approval (24 hours), approved check, hand-off to your email provider | Email to owner, then the provider | Replace the hand-off with your provider's node. The provider sends, with unsubscribe and address footer. | | 04-site-monitor.json | Every 5 minutes | Fetch page (never errors), healthy check (status 200 and a marker on the page), alert text, Telegram, email and Slack incoming webhook | All three | It alerts on every failed run until fixed. Choose a marker that only exists when the form renders. | | 05-workstation-daily-digest.json | Daily 18:00 | SSH `status`, `disk`, `jobs`, email digest | Email | Uses the restricted key; each SSH node sends one fixed action name. | | 06-workstation-chat-control.json | Telegram Trigger restricted to your chat and user ID | Parse command, route, SSH read actions, show result, approval for `/start`, model classifier for free text, reply | Telegram | Section 9 explains the safety design. | | 07-progress-watcher.json | Every 5 minutes | SSH `new-events`, anything new check, Telegram | Telegram | Silent when nothing changed. | | 08-error-alert.json | Error Trigger | Telegram message with workflow, node, error and execution link | Telegram | Error workflows fire for production runs, not manual tests. | ### 01-lead-to-telegram.json: Lead form to owner Telegram Save as `01-lead-to-telegram.json` and import. ```json { "id": "kit01leadtoteleg", "name": "Lead form to owner Telegram", "nodes": [ Nodes: compare with the last known state, email provider node to send to the waitlist segment that asked to be told, Slack message to the team. Watch out: only people who asked for the alert; respect the provider's unsubscribe. - **Appointment reminders.** Trigger: Schedule each morning. Nodes: read tomorrow's appointments (calendar or booking tool node), Send Email or the provider's transactional send per appointment, log a row. Watch out: send reminders only to customers who booked; keep the reason for the visit out of the message if it reveals health information. - **Invoice or payment-due reminders.** Trigger: Schedule daily. Nodes: accounting tool node (for example QuickBooks, Xero or Stripe nodes) to list invoices due in 3 days or overdue, Send Email to each customer with a link to pay, Telegram summary to the owner. Watch out: never put card numbers or full account details in any message. - **Daily digest of bookings or sales.** Trigger: Schedule each evening. Nodes: read the day's orders or bookings, a Code or Summarize node for totals, Send Email to the owner. Watch out: totals and counts, not customer details. - **Inventory or supply reorder alert.** Trigger: Schedule or a Webhook from your store. Nodes: read stock levels, IF below the reorder point, Telegram or Slack to whoever orders, optionally a Send and Wait approval before emailing the supplier. Watch out: a human approves anything that spends money. - **Social cross-posting with human approval.** Trigger: RSS Read or a Webhook when you publish. Nodes: draft the post text (optionally with a model), Telegram or Slack Send and Wait for approval, then the social network's node. Watch out: the model drafts, a person approves, and nothing posts without approval. - **New review alert with a model-drafted reply.** Add a chat model node to workflow 02 to draft the reply. The person still edits and posts it. ## 9. The AI workstation pattern: architecture and SSH ### The architecture, generalized - **The workstation:** a dedicated machine at home or in a data center. It runs local models (Ollama), a model gateway (LiteLLM) that gives every tool one OpenAI-compatible address, a chat interface, a vector store for documents, and n8n. Every one of these listens on 127.0.0.1 or a private network only. - **Your laptop or desktop:** where you talk to a hosted assistant (Claude Code or Codex in a terminal, or Claude or ChatGPT in a browser). The terminal assistants reach the workstation with SSH, using a key and a host alias. - **Unattended jobs on the workstation:** each coding-agent job gets a written brief, its own folder, a narrow permission profile, a result file, and one-line `queued`, `start` and `exit` records in a shared progress file. A watcher reports only changes. - **n8n as the control panel:** chat (Telegram or Slack) and email reach n8n; n8n reaches the workstation through a second, restricted SSH key that can only run named actions; replies and digests come back the same way. ### Step by step: SSH the safe way 1. **One ed25519 key per device.** On each laptop or phone that needs access: ```bash ssh-keygen -t ed25519 -C "REPLACE_laptop-name" -f ~/.ssh/id_ed25519_workstation ``` Use a passphrase. If one device is lost, you remove one line from `authorized_keys` and nothing else changes. 2. **A host alias** in `~/.ssh/config` on the laptop: ``` Host workstation HostName REPLACE_private-address-or-name User REPLACE_your-user IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_ed25519_workstation IdentitiesOnly yes ServerAliveInterval 30 ``` `IdentitiesOnly` stops the client offering every key it has; `ServerAliveInterval` keeps long sessions from dropping silently. Now `ssh workstation` works, and so does `ssh workstation 'uptime'`. 3. **A normal user, not root.** Sign in as your own user; use `sudo` for the few admin tasks. Create a second user (this kit calls it `ops`) with no sudo rights for the automation key. 4. **Password and root sign-in off.** Put this in a drop-in file such as `/etc/ssh/sshd_config.d/50-hardening.conf`: ``` PasswordAuthentication no KbdInteractiveAuthentication no PermitRootLogin no AllowUsers REPLACE_your-user ops ClientAliveInterval 60 ClientAliveCountMax 3 ``` Check the syntax before reloading, and keep your current session open until a new one signs in: ```bash sudo sshd -t && sudo systemctl reload ssh # the service is called sshd on some distributions ``` These lines passed `sshd -t` and showed the expected effective values with `sshd -T` on OpenSSH 10.3p1 in the tested lab. 5. **Do not open SSH to the whole internet.** Put the workstation and your devices on a private overlay network (WireGuard, or Tailscale which builds on it) and allow SSH only on that interface, or allow-list the few fixed addresses that need it in the firewall. Ask your assistant for the exact firewall rule for your operating system, and read it before applying (section 11, prompt 3). 6. **Let the hosted assistant use the alias.** In a terminal assistant on the laptop, the instruction is simply "run `ssh workstation ''` and show me the output before changing anything". The assistant gets your laptop's access, so the same rules apply as for you: read-only first, changes only after you approve them. ### Step by step: chat, n8n, the model and the workstation 1. **Trigger:** Telegram Trigger restricted to your chat ID and user ID (or a Slack trigger limited to one channel). Messages from anyone else never start the workflow. 2. **Parse and allow-list:** a Code node turns the message into an action name from a fixed list (`status`, `disk`, `jobs`, `result`, `start`) and a job name that must match `^[a-z0-9][a-z0-9-]{0,39}$`. Anything else becomes `unknown` and gets a help reply. 3. **Switch:** one branch per action. 4. **Approval for anything that changes state:** `/start ` goes to Telegram **Send and Wait for Response** with Approve and Decline buttons and a 30 minute limit. n8n 2.42.7 offers this operation on the Send Email, Telegram, Slack, Discord, Microsoft Teams, Outlook and Gmail nodes. On the tested version, the approval link ignored requests from clients that do not look like a browser (the test's command-line client got an empty answer and the run stayed waiting), so a link preview cannot approve by accident. 5. **SSH node:** sends a fixed action name plus, at most, the validated job name. The SSH node never receives text written by a person or a model. 6. **Reply:** the output, trimmed to 3,500 characters, goes back to the same chat. 7. **Watcher and digest:** a Schedule trigger asks for `new-events` every 5 minutes and posts only exit or stall lines; a daily email digest sends `status`, `disk` and `jobs`. ### Where a model helps, and the rules that keep it safe - **Classify a free-text request** into one of the read-only actions. In workflow 06 the Text Classifier node can only choose `status`, `disk`, `jobs` or "other"; each choice leads to a fixed action. A model cannot select `start` at all. - **Summarize a result file** before it goes to chat, or **draft a reply** to a review or a customer email for a person to approve. - **Prompt injection:** text from chat, email, forms and web pages is data, not instructions. The rules this kit follows: - the model may only choose from the allow-list, through a structured output n8n validates; - the SSH node never receives model-written text; - anything that changes state needs a human approval; - the workstation's wrapper refuses anything that is not an exact action name, so even a mistake upstream stops there. In the tested lab, a stand-in model answered with `status; id` as if injected. The classifier rejected the output as not matching its format, the run failed and the error workflow alerted the owner, and the workstation received nothing. ## 10. The allow-list wrapper and the forced-command key ### The automation key Create a separate key for n8n, on the n8n host or anywhere safe, with no passphrase (n8n must use it unattended) and never reuse a personal key: ```bash ssh-keygen -t ed25519 -N '' -C n8n-automation -f n8n_automation ``` Paste the private key into n8n's **SSH Private Key** credential (host, port, user `ops`), then delete the private key file from wherever you created it. Add the public key to the `ops` user's `~/.ssh/authorized_keys` on the workstation as one line: ``` command="/usr/local/bin/workstation-actions",restrict,no-pty,no-port-forwarding,no-agent-forwarding,no-X11-forwarding ssh-ed25519 AAAA...REPLACE_public_key n8n-automation ``` - `command=` makes sshd run the wrapper whatever the client asked for, and puts the request in `SSH_ORIGINAL_COMMAND`. - `restrict` turns off port, agent and X11 forwarding, terminal allocation and `~/.ssh/rc`. The explicit `no-*` options repeat those restrictions for older servers that do not understand `restrict`. - Optionally add `from="REPLACE_n8n-host-address"` so the key only works from the n8n machine. Set the n8n SSH nodes' **Working Directory** to `/`. The SSH node always sends `cd ; `, so the wrapper strips exactly `cd / ; ` and nothing else. ### The wrapper Save as `/usr/local/bin/workstation-actions`, owned by root and not writable by `ops` (`sudo chown root:root` and `sudo chmod 755` on the file), so the automation account cannot rewrite its own rules. Adjust the paths in the first lines. ```sh #!/bin/sh # workstation-actions: the ONLY program the automation key may run (forced by authorized_keys). # sshd puts whatever the client asked for in SSH_ORIGINAL_COMMAND. We never execute that text. # We compare it with a short list of exact action names and run our own fixed command for each. set -u umask 077 BASE="${HOME}/agent-jobs" # adjust to your layout PROGRESS="${BASE}/progress.txt" # one line per job event: " start|exit|stalled ...
