# Security, identity and remote access Kit: Apache projects for small business October 29, 2026. [Read the companion article](https://jwatte.com/blog/apache-security-identity-remote-access-small-business/). ## How to use this kit Write down the access problem, the applications involved and who can approve a change. Every server here needs IT help; no run tier entries exist in this group. Begin with synthetic accounts and an isolated test before connecting real people. The price worksheet is an operating estimate, not a security assessment or a migration quote. ## Provider cards ### Guacamole Browser gateway to existing desktops. Illustrations: two dispatch staff in a twelve person HVAC company; five traveling staff in a fifteen person property manager. The [official Docker guide](https://guacamole.apache.org/doc/gug/guacamole-docker.html) describes web application, guacd and database containers, with no universal CPU/RAM floor. Our pilot is one 2 vCPU/4 GiB host, not a session capacity guarantee. Requires container, database and remote access administration. Use [release 1.6.0](https://guacamole.apache.org/releases/), dated June 22, 2025, after checking [advisories](https://guacamole.apache.org/security/). Ask who configures authentication, protects internal connections and patches both application and gateway. [Splashtop Pro](https://www.splashtop.com/products/remote-access) is $8.25/user/month billed annually at $99/user, read October 29, 2026. Compare required features before treating it as equivalent. Backup the database and configuration, protect credentials separately and rehearse restore. First week: connect one synthetic user to one test desktop, deny a second user, remove access, verify the result and restore the configuration. Existing computers and operating system licenses remain additional in both options. ### Syncope Identity provisioning across applications. Illustrations: seasonal accounts for a twenty person landscaping firm; location changes in a thirty staff restaurant group. The [4.1 guide](https://syncope.apache.org/docs/4.1/getting-started.html) specifies dual core 2 GHz CPU, 8 GB RAM, 200 MB disk minimum and current JDK 21. The disk minimum does not cover retained operational data. Our two 4 vCPU/8 GiB hosts separate application and database, a planning assumption rather than a required node count or availability promise. Use [4.1.3 downloads](https://syncope.apache.org/downloads.html), dated September 14, 2026 in the official release record. Requires Java/database operations and identity integration skills. Ask who approves roles, retries failed changes and reconciles downstream permissions. [Entra ID P1](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security/business/microsoft-entra-pricing) costs $7/user/month paid yearly, confirmed October 29; it may already be included in your subscription and is a narrower alternative, not every Syncope connector. Preserve database, connector configuration and protected credentials; rehearse recovery and access removal. First week: add, move and remove an invented person in a test application, interrupt the connector, and get owner approval of resulting permissions. Integration is separately quoted. ### Directory Server LDAP directory for applications whose vendors support it. Illustrations: an older job system in a ten person print shop; a replacement reporting app in a twenty five person machine shop. The [install guide](https://directory.apache.org/apacheds/basic-ug/1.3-installing-and-starting.html) lists Java 8 and a 384 MB default JVM allocation, not total machine sizing. Our test host is 2 vCPU/4 GiB. LDAP administration and supported runtime verification are necessary. The [download](https://directory.apache.org/apacheds/downloads.html) is 2.0.0.AM27, a milestone dated October 21, 2023 in [project news](https://directory.apache.org/apacheds/news.html). Do not call it final 2.0. Ask the application vendor to confirm compatibility and the provider to explain support for this older milestone. Entra P1 at $7/user/month annually is a comparison only if the application's managed integration actually works. Back up directory data, configuration and certificates; test a clean restore and permissions. First week: read entries, test bad passwords, change a group, remove a user and restore. Do not begin a production domain migration from this worksheet. ### Caldera (Incubating) Authorized security emulation needs a specialist and a written scope. [Installation guidance](https://caldera.readthedocs.io/en/latest/Installing-Caldera.html) recommends 8 GB RAM/two CPUs for development and agent compilation, with Linux/macOS, Python and Node requirements. A thirty five person manufacturer might commission an isolated assessment. Ask what is excluded, who can stop the exercise and how evidence is handled. Assume 1 to 3 monthly server maintenance hours; the security engagement is separately quoted. Pentera publishes no price; ask for a quote. No live testing instructions are supplied here. ### Directory Studio Desktop LDAP administration client, not a new server. [Linux installation](https://directory.apache.org/studio/download/download-linux.html) requires Java 11+ and a recent distribution; no hardware minimum is stated. A bookkeeping firm's provider might review groups; check GLBA Safeguards Rule applicability before covered financial data. Ask for change review and recovery procedures. Assume 1 to 3 monthly review hours and no separate hosting cost. Managed Entra P1 can remove the need for LDAP administration only when the underlying applications support that change. ### Knox Gateway for an existing Hadoop platform and identity directory. The [user guide](https://knox.apache.org/books/knox-2-1-0/user-guide.html) supplies no universal CPU/RAM floor; multiple gateways are needed for availability beyond one process. A fifty person logistics firm already using Hadoop is an illustration. Ask about certificates, redundant gateways and directory dependencies. Assume 6 to 16 platform operations hours/month plus integration. [Cloudera](https://www.cloudera.com/products/pricing.html) Data Hub consumption is $0.04/CCU/hour excluding infrastructure/network; support is contact sales. The older registry release in the table requires a current project check before implementation. ### Ranger Policy administration and plugins for existing data services. The [quick start](https://ranger.apache.org/quick_start_guide.html) has no universal hardware floor. A forty person distributor might separate supplier price permissions. Ask who reviews policy changes, stores audit records and tests plugin updates. Assume 6 to 16 platform operations hours/month, excluding policy engineering. [AWS Lake Formation](https://aws.amazon.com/lake-formation/pricing/) permissions have no additional charge, but dependent services still bill. This is a platform alternative, not hosted Ranger. Incubating projects are [not yet fully endorsed by the ASF](https://incubator.apache.org/policy/incubation.html). Use the [ASF advisory directory](https://www.apache.org/security/projects.html) and [security guidance](https://www.apache.org/security/) to assign an update owner for every component. ## Full project table | Project | What it does for a business | Who runs it | Latest recorded release and date | |---|---|---|---| | [Apache Caldera (Incubating)](https://caldera.incubator.apache.org/) | Helps security teams test defenses by simulating attacker behavior in an authorized environment. | Your IT department or provider | 5.3.0; 2025-04-24; before incubation | | [Apache Casbin (Incubating)](https://casbin.incubator.apache.org/) | Adds configurable authorization rules to applications. | Your developer | 3.11.0; 2026-08-20 | | [Apache Directory LDAP API](https://directory.apache.org/api) | Lets Java applications communicate with directory servers. | Your developer | 2.1.9; 2026-10-12 | | [Apache Directory Server](https://directory.apache.org/apacheds) | Stores user and organization directory records for connected applications. | Your IT department or provider | 2.0.0.AM27; 2023-10-21; preview | | [Apache Directory Studio](https://directory.apache.org/studio/) | Provides a desktop interface for administering directory servers and their records. | Your IT department or provider | 2.0.0-M17; 2021-07-24; preview | | [Apache Fortress](https://directory.apache.org/fortress/) | Adds role based access rules to applications. | Your developer | 3.0.1; 2025-07-28 | | [Apache Guacamole](https://guacamole.apache.org) | Gives staff browser access to existing remote desktops and servers. | Your IT department or provider | 1.6.0; 2025-06-22; registry | | [Apache Kerby](https://directory.apache.org/kerby/) | Provides Kerberos authentication tools and libraries for Java applications. | Your developer | 2.1.2; 2026-06-25 | | [Apache Knox](https://knox.apache.org) | Controls access to Hadoop services through a shared gateway. | Your IT department or provider | 1.2.0; 2018-12-18; registry | | [Apache Ranger](https://ranger.apache.org) | Manages access policies and audit records across data platforms. | Your IT department or provider | 2.9.0; 2026-08-05; file date | | [Apache Santuario](https://santuario.apache.org) | Signs and encrypts XML documents inside applications. | Your developer | 4.0.4; 2025-04-28 | | [Apache Shiro](https://shiro.apache.org/) | Adds login, permissions and security controls to Java applications. | Your developer | 2.0.0; 2024-02-28; registry | | [Apache Syncope](https://syncope.apache.org/) | Manages user identities, accounts and access across business systems. | Your IT department or provider | 4.1.3; 2026-09-14 | | [Apache Teaclave](https://teaclave.apache.org) | Provides tools for developers building applications that protect sensitive computations. | Your developer | 0.6.0; 2023-06-26 | | [Apache WSS4J](https://ws.apache.org/wss4j/) | Adds message signing and encryption to web service applications. | Your developer | 4.0.2; 2026-09-30 | Registry labels refer to the [ASF project directory data](https://projects.apache.org/json/foundation/projects.json), read October 29, 2026 at 21:00 UTC. [B2](https://www.backblaze.com/cloud-storage/pricing) $6.95/TB/month after 10 GB free. [BLS wage](https://data.bls.gov/oesprofile/?areas=INDUSTRY,STATE,MSA&major_group=150000&measure=01&occupation=151244&year=2025) $47.66/hour divided by [compensation share](https://data.bls.gov/timeseries/CMU2020000000000P) 0.700 gives $68.09/hour. This is employee compensation, below typical provider billing. Prices are USD before tax. Setup = hours × rate. Monthly = servers + backup storage + admin hours × rate. Total = setup + 36 × monthly. Savings = managed total minus self hosted total. When self hosted monthly is lower, break even = round up((self setup minus alternative setup)/(alternative monthly minus self monthly)); otherwise never without an initial setup advantage. Our assumptions: Guacamole one host and two to five paid users; Syncope two hosts and ten to twenty five paid users; Directory Server one host and ten to twenty five paid users. Node counts are identical in each low/high case. Retained backups are 100 to 500 GB, zero chargeable transfer/API use. Guacamole/Syncope use 24 to 60 setup hours and 6 to 16 monthly hours; Directory Server's limited pilot uses 4 to 12 and 1 to 3. Alternative setup is zero only for subscription comparison. Existing endpoint costs, custom integration, migration, training, compliance and incidents are excluded equally and need quotes. | Guacamole gateway versus managed remote access | Low case | High case | |---|---:|---:| | Our assumption: setup hours | 24 | 60 | | Our assumption: administration hours/month | 6 | 16 | | Our assumption: stored backup gb | 100 | 500 | | Servers/month | $24 | $24 | | Setup labor | $1,634 | $4,085 | | Total/month | $433 | $1,117 | | Self hosted, 36 months | $17,228 | $44,292 | | Splashtop Pro, monthly | $17 | $41 | | Alternative, 36 months | $594 | $1,485 | | Savings from self hosting, 36 months | Negative $16,634 | Negative $42,807 | | Break even month | Never | Never | Setup = hours × $68.09. The Entra comparisons require application compatibility and do not promise every Syncope governance feature or a drop in LDAP replacement. Check existing subscription entitlements before buying seats. ### Setup time when Claude or ChatGPT does the typing We keep the Guacamole example's one $24 server and 100 to 500 GB of backups. We apply our IT assistance assumptions to its existing IT labor budget, despite using one host. These paired low and high cases are assumptions, not measured installations; human review is included. [Coding studies](https://metr.org/blog/2025-07-10-early-2025-ai-experienced-os-dev-study/) do not validate deployment savings. | Guacamole: assumptions and 36 month costs | Low case | High case | | --- | ---: | ---: | | Manual setup hours | 24 | 60 | | AI setup share; hours | 65%; 15.6 | 90%; 54 | | Human review hours within AI setup | 6 | 18 | | Manual admin hours/month | 6 | 16 | | AI admin share; hours/month | 80%; 4.8 | 100%; 16 | | Human review hours within AI admin/month | 3 | 8 | | Manual total, 36 months | $17,228 | $44,292 | | Claude Max 5x subscription total, 36 months | $15,615 | $45,783 | | ChatGPT Pro 100 subscription total, 36 months | $15,615 | $45,783 | | API: Claude Opus 5.5 total, 36 months | $13,787 | $44,345 | | API: GPT-6 Astra total, 36 months | $13,902 | $45,038 | | Assumed setup API input / output tokens | 1,000,000 / 100,000 | 5,000,000 / 500,000 | | Assumed monthly API input / output tokens | 500,000 / 50,000 | 2,000,000 / 200,000 | | Opus input / short write / read / output rates per million | $4 / $5 / $0.20 / $20 | $4 / $5 / $0.20 / $20 | | Astra input / short write / read / output rates per million | $10 / $12.50 / $1 / $50 | $10 / $12.50 / $1 / $50 | With L = $68.09/hour, S/A = manual setup/monthly hours, q/r = AI shares, H = hosting plus backups, and T0/Tm = setup/monthly tools: manual total = S × L + 36 × (H + A × L); AI total = S × q × L + T0 + 36 × (H + A × r × L + Tm). Round totals after calculation. [Claude](https://claude.com/pricing) and [ChatGPT](https://chatgpt.com/pricing/) each cost $100 for the selected monthly plan: one setup month, then $50/month (50%) for 36 operating months if other work uses the rest. Dedicated use adds $1,800 to each total. Allowances differ; check limits and budget extra usage. High cases save no admin hours; subscriptions exceed manual costs from month 7. [API billing](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/pricing) is separate. Token cost = (ordinary input × rate + cache writes × rate + cache reads × rate + output × rate) / 1,000,000. Our cumulative budgets include retries and billed reasoning: low input is 30% ordinary, 10% short writes, 60% reads; high input is uncached. Use standard rates within context limits. Claude Code or [Codex](https://developers.openai.com/codex/cli) can draft Guacamole container settings and authentication database backups. Desktop Commander can install containers, edit Guacamole configuration and read guacd logs through authorized server access; we budget its free local server, excluding optional paid Remote. Claude in Chrome can inspect provider settings, Cloudflare DNS and Guacamole connection permissions; ChatGPT Work offers a separate cloud browser, not an assumed Chrome extension. Use a new or staging server, keep secrets out of chat, and approve commands or restrict them in a sandbox. Watch dashboard actions; review changes, test denied connections and restore the authentication database. Use subscriptions through supported supervised tools and API keys for custom automation; check applicable terms and never share account credentials. We still own backups, updates and access decisions. Our conclusion stays the same: Splashtop remains cheaper at $594 to $1,485 over 36 months; AI assistance does not remove remote access oversight.
